End the Dog Meat Trade in Indonesia 2366

Oct 29, 2015

Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama

Dear Governor Tjahaja Purnama,

As a person concerned about animals and human health, and a supporter
of In Defense of Animals, an international animal protection
organization with 200,000 supporters, the recent news stories featuring
the horrific cruelty and health concerns surrounding the dog meat trade
throughout Indonesia has me outraged and very concerned. The treatment
of these dogs and the disease risks posed to your citizens now casts a
very dark shadow over Indonesia, previously viewed as a premiere
holiday destination.

As your city, Jakarta, was identified as one of the areas for the
largest dog meat consumption, I strongly encourage you to take this as
an opportunity to ban the dog meat trade. As you know, trucking dogs in
from rabies endemic areas will only lead to rabies spreading throughout
your city, harming people and animals. It most certainly will not aid
in Indonesia's commitment to becoming rabies free by 2020. I hope you
will do your part to protect the people and animals of your country,
ensuring it is again viewed as a tropical paradise.

Sincerely,

Dr. Juliana Schiesari
